Creating your Baseball Card Collection

Baseball cards can be collected in many ways. For instance, you can build team sets, collect individual players, collect Hall of Fame Players or focus your collection around other points. To collect team sets you may begin by collecting current cards of players from your favorite team. The more advanced collector may want to collect cards that are older or more rare. A good collection of Brooklyn Dodgers or Boston Braves players would be interesting. Cards from the Topps 1952 set are particularly desirable. This set includes teams that have moved to new locations such as the before mentioned Dodgers and Braves. It also includes players from the New York Giants, Philadelphia Athletics, St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators. Here we can see how baseball has changed in history.

The main point to remember in collecting baseball cards is collect what interests you. Have fun with your hobby.

Accusations of Racism and Barry Bonds' Home-Run Record

Barry Bonds has shown enormous strength and perseverance in breaking the all time home-run record that had been established by Hank Aaron. Many people assert that the new record is tainted. There is a claim that Bonds used steroids or performance enhancing drugs. These people believe he could not have reached this milestone without the help of drugs. Barry Bonds has not tested positive for steroids and has denied he has used these drugs.

There have been recent claims from some people in the African American community that racism is a primary factor in these allegations. I do not agree with this position. It is undeniable that racism has been a problem in American history. When Hank Aaron approached Babe Ruth's career home-run record, racism was indeed alive and well. There were many hateful and mean spirited threats directed toward Hank Aaron and that is a sad part of our past. I do not think racism is a factor here. After all, Bonds broke the record of a fellow African American. Americans in general today celebrate the accomplishment of many African American sports heroes. When Emmitt Smith became the all time rushing leader, his achievement was celebrated by White and Black Americans.

Unfortunately, the stigma of drug use in our contemporary society is a problem. Barry Bonds is a product of modern times and steroid use by some major league notables has been discovered. However, at this point his guilt has not been proven. Therefore, we should celebrate his achievement. If the future brings new evidence then we deal with the topic as necessary, but for now Barry Bonds is the Home-run champion.

Babe Ruth: Still a Home-Run Champion

During Baseball's early days, base hits and pitching strategy ruled the game. The idea was to slowly add runs by advancing base-runners methodically around the bases. The strategy depended on base hits, bunts and steals but the home-run was not seen often. One season Frank Baker earned the nickname "Homerun" because he hit so many. "Homerun" Baker hit 9 home-runs that season.

George Herman Ruth also had a nickname. He was called "Babe". He was a fantastic pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Babe Ruth was such a good pitcher that he would have very probably been in the Baseball Hall of Fame if he had stayed in that position. His earned run average was low, he pitched complete games and won many more than he lost. In World Series play, he pitched 3 complete games and won all three. Babe Ruth could do other things well. He could collect base hits and even steal bases but his greatest skill was his ability to hit home-runs.
